As an integral part of the Hardware Product Engineering team - which includes design, integration, and validation of Aurora’s Hardware - the Director of Electrical Engineering is responsible for leading and executing a broad range of design development responsibilities to deliver Aurora’s key hardware products.
The Director of Electrical Engineering must be an exceptional cross-functional leader across multiple teams internal and external to Aurora. This position requires deep technical expertise in areas such as electrical design of computers, LiDARs, peripheral modules, and autonomous vehicle electrical architecture. This role directly manages the EE LiDAR, EE Computer Modules, SI/PI/EMC, and Layout design functions, which are responsible for delivering complex projects from concept to product. The Director of Electrical Engineering collaborates closely with department leadership, engineers, software architecture, program management, new product introduction, and suppliers (CMs/ODMs/OEMs) to define critical programs and drive custom hardware development to meet top-level vehicle program objectives. The role works closely with technical domain experts to coordinate many fast-changing, details that must resolve to deliver high quality, complex hardware products.
The Director of Electrical Engineering sets strategy for multi-generational hardware investments, establishes and refines team best practices, manages individual and team growth plans, and presents critical updates and results to senior leadership and key stakeholders. This leadership position reports directly to the Vice President of Hardware Product Engineering.
In this role, you will:
- Lead and develop an exceptional team of electrical engineers within Aurora’s Hardware Product Engineering team
- Be responsible for the custom electrical design and development of computers, LiDAR, peripheral module that makes up the Aurora Driver Hardware
- Direct teams including electrical design, signal/power integrity, layout, and EMC, through the product development process
- Provide vision, strategy, and roadmap for all of Aurora’s electrical engineering products
- Collaborate with architecture, hardware, software, and platform partner teams to develop novel autonomous vehicle hardware
- Drive critical decisions on tooling (such as electrical CAD), best practices, and processes suitable for maturing EE products and scope
- Lead collaborative efforts between internal teams and external companies to leverage industry technologies and/or develop new technologies for the autonomous vehicle space, including the development and introduction of new/custom silicon
- Develop architectural block diagrams to suit technology trends and product requirements
- Identify and resolve conflicts, interdependencies, and program issues quickly and efficiently by engaging in proactive risk management; including critical decision making, and communicating status and issues to the development and Aurora leadership
- Represent the hardware design function in leadership reviews, as well as in core team, company, and external meetings
Required Qualifications
- This role requires a bachelor's or master's degree with a focus in electrical or computer engineering
- 12+ years experience in industry developing complex electrical hardware
- 8+ years direct, personnel leadership of electrical engineering teams including hiring, establishing best practices, managing performance and growth
- Expertise with the full hardware product lifecycle (including architecture, development, validation, and market introduction)
- Responsible for designing and shipping electronics products at scale
- Strong technical background and broad experience, spanning several disciplines within the electrical domain
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with, or applied knowledge of, motor vehicle systems and bus architectures
- Knowledge of automotive requirements, safety framework (ISO26262) and qualification processes
- Experience with LiDAR, Radar, Optics, Computer/Networking, and Security
- Experience advancing automotive electro-mechanical prototypes to high volume with contract manufacturers
- Proficiency with Altium/Cadence tools
The base salary range for this position is $235,000,000-$376,000 per year. Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
