We are designing the software and hardware to power the transportation of our future that will make our roads safer, give more people access to mobility, and reduce congestion and pollution in cities - improving the quality of life for all. We are searching for a Manufacturing Engineer who will use his/her expertise to provide manufacturing input and support for electronics, photonics, connectors and wire harness designs, coordinate initial manufacturing of prototype assemblies and support activities in the shift of prototypes to low volume production.

In addition, they will coordinate the development of functional test equipment in the production environment and will use statistical methods to champion continuous improvement activities.


  • Quickly come-up-to speed on new technologies and engineering challenges
  • Conduct multidisciplinary rapid problem-solving activities and propose solutions to prototype and production manufacturing challenges. (i.e., design for manufacturability)
  • Create and maintain work instructions, test methods, checklists, process flow diagrams, PFMEAs, and other required manufacturing documentation
  • Design assembly jigs, tools, and test apparatus for use in production environment
  • Prepare and maintain detailed layouts of buildings and equipment
  • Work collaboratively with various suppliers and service providers including printed circuit board assemblies, electronic assemblies and cable harnesses
  • Work with Program Managers to support development and execution of APQP compliant program plans
  • Support and Guide the manufacturing team through all phases of Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP); particularly the later phases associated with designing and developing the manufacturing process and validating the Process / Product (i.e., MSAs, production trial runs, Run @ Rate, PPAPs, control plans)
  • Coordinate the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members and evaluating results
  • Create staffing plans based on volume forecasts for new programs
  • Lead or participate in Kaizen activities to ensure continuous improvement in processes, products, components, raw materials, and equipment
  • Calculate required dunnage usage. Confirm vendor designs, testing as necessary, and order all necessary dunnage for new programs
  • Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing


  • BS in Engineering (i.e. Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Materials) required; MS in Engineering preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in electronics and/or photonics manufacturing optimizing manufacturing systems for cost, delivery, quality (3+ years with MS degree)
  • Knowledge of and experience with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Systems required
  • Knowledge of and experience with IATF 16949:2016 Automotive Quality Management Systems preferred
  • Knowledge of Lean / Six Sigma Tools (Green Belt certification preferred)
  • Understanding of DMAIC problem solving methodologies preferred
  • Knowledge of and Experience with Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP); particularly the later phases associated with designing and developing the manufacturing process and validating the Process / Product (i.e., MSAs, production trial runs, Run @ Rate, PPAPs) preferred
  • Ability to motivate team efforts to accomplish goals

The Founding Team

Aurora has assembled the most experienced leadership team in the space. Chris Urmson helped lead Carnegie Mellon’s efforts in DARPA’s Grand Challenges, then was a founding member of Google’s self-driving team. Sterling Anderson worked on the tech at MIT before leading Tesla’s Autopilot system. Drew Bagnell, also a Carnegie Mellon alum, is a machine learning expert who helped build Uber’s autonomy effort. At Aurora, these three continue to bring experts from all areas of the industry to the team. We are funded by some of Silicon Valley’s best venture capital firms, including Sequoia, Greylock and Index Ventures.
