Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all. We’re searching for a Staff Hardware Systems Applications Engineer.
At Aurora, we’re on a mission to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly. It all starts with the Aurora Driver, a platform created from industry-leading hardware and software and designed to adapt across a variety of vehicle types and industries.
Aurora is in the best position to lead the self-driving space with a team of unparalleled depth and expertise, the technology to deliver, and the partnerships to build a transformative business for the long-term.
The Hardware Systems Applications Engineering team at Aurora is seeking a candidate with expertise in diagnosing complex issues within electromechanical systems and driving them to resolution, who also has excellent communication and cross-functional project management skills. Aurora’s Hardware Systems Applications Engineers work closely with both engineering design teams and teams in the field to deeply understand the current state of all of our hardware systems at any given time to enable rapid issue debugging, development of issue resolution plans, and influence of future system designs.
In this role, you will:
- Work on-site at our Dallas facility which is our center of excellence for fleet operations.
- Work hands on with Aurora’s self driving truck test fleet on a daily basis performing diagnostics, root cause analysis, instrumentation and prototype testing.
- Use a diverse set of applications and tools to deeply investigate system-level hardware issues which occur in the field of operations.
- OEM provided diagnostic tools such as Cummins Insite, Eaton ServiceRanger, Bendix KBDiag
- Work with measurement instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, thermocouples and CAN loggers.
- Develop measurement instrumentation methods as needed if OTS solutions are not available
- CANAlyzer, CANape or equivalent to log and plot CAN data and create custom scripts to run fault injection testing.
- Use of python and work with Linux command line tooling to analyze log files generated by the Aurora Driver and plot event data
- Develop tooling and dashboards to measure hardware performance and identify trends across large data sets.
- Coordinate cross-functional solutions with operations, service, and engineering teams.
- Create technical investigation and test reports which will be ingested by senior/executive leadership.
- Assist with:
- Development of processes and dashboards to triage and investigate HW issues at scale.
- Tracking and reporting on HW performance metrics.
- Generally be a conduit for information between hardware engineering and field operations.
Required Qualifications
- BS in Engineering or equivalent
- 5+ years of work-related experience in the Automotive Engineering field, specifically with either test engineering or field service engineering.
- Ability to be objective (data-driven) and apply an empirical process to solving issues.
- Ability to interpret complex system architecture and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to get hands-on with heavy machinery for the purpose of data acquisition and issue investigation.
- Deep understanding of fundamental automotive engineering principles.
- Ability to use a diverse set of applications and tools to perform technical analysis and investigate issues with self-driving HW systems for both heavy truck and passenger vehicles.
- Perform hands on debugging and data collection on vehicles in the field using OEM provided diagnostic tools (Eg Cummins Insite) and Aurora’s custom tooling.
- Develop custom instrumentation when needed, where existing logs do not provide sufficient data to identify root cause.
- Analyze log files and plot event data (Eg. CANAlyzer, python scripts) to reconstruct the series of events leading up to an issue.
- Ability to manipulate various forms of data, using coding languages including but not limited to SQL and Python, in order to investigate specific issues or analyze fleet performance at an aggregate level
- Ability to create rich technical reports summarizing complex issue investigations with quantifiable results.
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to interpret and provide well-formed, objective feedback on complex system requirements, designs, and processes.
- Ability to work cross-functionally across service, test operations, engineering, and leadership teams.
- Ability to handle a diverse set of daily tasks ranging from high-level process development to low-level field issue debugging.
- Ability to coordinate multiple priorities/projects efficiently in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
