Led by a team of seasoned experts, including three of the world’s leaders of self-driving technology, our mission is to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly. We are designing the software and hardware to power the transportation of our future that will make our roads safer, give more people access to mobility, and reduce congestion and pollution in cities - improving the quality of life for all. The challenge in what we are endeavoring to achieve is transcendent; we are developing perhaps the world’s most complex computing system and asking it to perform the task of transporting and keeping safe our most precious asset: human life.

We are searching for a talented, motivated person to contribute to the research and development of our Lidar product family. This person must have the demonstrated ability to deliver results effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced startup environment.


  • Coordinating team members and project activities in a dynamic, cross-functional organization
  • Preparing technical reports for management
  • Writing test plans for component, subsystem, and system validation
  • Troubleshooting complex system issues ranging from test equipment setups to lidar prototypes, requiring in-depth cross-functional knowledge ranging from electronics to photonics to software
  • Defining requirements for external suppliers and contractors, and managing execution
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of a rigorous system engineering process


  • MS (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated expertise working with complex electro-optic systems
  • 5+ years of expertise in a product development role
  • Ability to independently collect and analyze data
  • Must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced startup environment


  • PhD (or equivalent)
  • Automotive systems experience
  • 8+ years of expertise in product development of complex optical, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electronic and RF circuits
  • Experience with designing tests for design validation and verification
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams
  • Familiarity with systems engineering best practices
  • Familiarity with FMCW lidar

The Founding Team

Aurora has assembled the most experienced leadership team in the space. Chris Urmson helped lead Carnegie Mellon’s efforts in DARPA’s Grand Challenges, then was a founding member of Google’s self-driving team. Sterling Anderson worked on the tech at MIT before leading Tesla’s Autopilot system. Drew Bagnell, also a Carnegie Mellon alum, is a machine learning expert who helped build Uber’s autonomy effort. At Aurora, these three continue to bring experts from all areas of the industry to the team. We are funded by some of Silicon Valley’s best venture capital firms, including Sequoia, Greylock and Index Ventures.
