About the role:
As a Principal Engineer on the Kong Cloud Gateway team, you will be working closely with the team as well as with other key stakeholders across the company to design, architect and build out Kong’s next-generation API Gateway platform as a service.
This team owns the core orchestration platform of the Kong Cloud Gateways. If a customer builds a new Kong Gateway, makes changes to it or a spike in traffic happens, it’s this software that knows how to move all of the pieces and makes all the needed changes actually happen in the backend.
This platform enables resilient, scalable and seamless orchestration of compute and network components across the different public clouds and delivers a fully managed, highly available and super efficient Kong Gateway platform to all our cloud customers around the world.

What you’ll be doing:
- Design and build the infrastructure for a global cloud service that can support hundreds of thousands of Kong clusters, process billions of requests and collect billions of metrics per day.
- Design, implement, and troubleshoot the automation and monitoring of services that seamlessly spans the globe - including several cloud providers.
- Build for resilience. Our goal is that nobody’s pager goes off, ever. We are building this service from the ground up and while we work on that - participate in a weekly on-call rotation.
- Improve our infrastructure capabilities, optimizing for cost, simplicity, and maintainability.
- And any additional tasks required by manager.
What you’ll bring:
- 8+ years of experience running a mission critical service at scale.
- 8+ year of experience running critical production systems in a Linux environment.
- 4+ years of experience working with AWS/GPC/Azure.
- Experience in distributed systems.
- Solid understanding of infrastructure as code software.
- Solid understanding of web and network protocols and standards (HTTP, TLS, TCP/IP, DNS, etc).
- Amazing scripting skills as well as great experience with PaaS application development.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
