The challenge

You’ll work directly with our Sales organization to advise them how to properly structure agreements and be our resident expert reporting up to Lever’s Head of Legal. You will be the point person to continuously train our departmental leaders and develop our sales team’s understanding of negotiation and renewal best practices.

In addition to partnering with our revenue generating side of the business, you will take ownership of vendor contract negotiations and set the standards for Lever vendor legal standards moving forward.

The opportunity

This is a great opportunity for an entry level attorney to impact a fast growing business. This role is critical to scaling the Lever business , and the right person will have a huge impact on Lever’s future  success. This person will report to Lever’s Head of Legal and Data Protection Officer and will quickly to take over commercial contracting for the Lever Business, with additional opportunities to grow into other areas of the Legal Department as their interests grow and as the needs of the Lever business change.

The team

Lever’s Legal Team is responsible for supporting all departments within the business, particularly supporting go to market teams in the Sales and Customer Success organizations with contract support and guidance on data protection questions posed by Lever Customers.

The skill set

  • 3+ years of contract drafting and negotiation experience at a technology company and/or law firm OR a law degree with one year of contract drafting and negotiation experience
  • Excellent business judgement and business acumen with the ability to assess contract risks unique to Lever’s business
  • Experience training and teaching peers on negotiation, contracts, jargon, and legal best practices
  • Previous experience owning business contracts, external vendor contracts, and everything in between
  • Desire to work cross-functionally across many departments partnering with everyone from the c-suite to account executives
  • Success in identifying and implementing process improvements and best practices
  • Strong interest in learning the Lever business and finding new ways to contribute
  • Preferred: juris doctor degree and licensed to practice law in a state within the United States

Within 1 month, you’ll

  • Complete Ramp Camp, our comprehensive onboarding program designed to jumpstart Leveroos and get them to full productivity as quickly as possible, while gaining a broader understanding about how their role fits into the org, Lever’s product, mission, etc.
  • Familiarize yourself with Lever’s standard forms and review common redlines and responses for customer agreements.
  • Establish standardized naming conventions for Lever agreements and begin the process of more effectively organizing customer agreements
  • Take responsibility for legal negotiation of vendor agreements under $25,000.
  • Take responsibility for NDA review.

Within 3 months, you’ll

  • Create a contract negotiation playbook to standardize Lever’s position for common legal requests and redlines. Create
  • Create a standard approval framework for legal requests in excess of Lever’s standard legal positions.
  • Take ownership of contract support for small business, mid market and enterprise segments of the Lever sales business.
  • Take ownership of contract support for all existing customer segments.
  • Also own the vendor contracting and negotiating process for all vendor contracts and negotiate/renew contracts.
  • Build a strong partnership through 1:1s and other regular meetings with legal counsel and escalate legal matters as necessary. You will lead in defining when and what to escalate
  • Make a recommendation for a more scalable contract management database and framework, working with the Head of Sales Operations and Head of Legal
  • Take ownership of responding to general inquiries and requests for legal documents
  • Take responsibility for legal negotiation of vendor agreements under $50,000.

Within 6 months, you’ll

  • Advise Account Executives on contract objection-handling techniques, alternative contract options, and value propositioning to help close deals. You’ll also be point for responding to customer and internal stakeholder questions about key contract terms
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop a robust objections-handling database

  • Take ownership of responding to general inquiries and requests for legal documents
  • Take ownership of customer facing legal templates
  • Lead training for Sales organization on contracts on an ongoing basis. You’ll continue to check in with Sales leadership to make sure relevant areas are being addressed and reps are trained up
  • Lead training for all departmental leaders on vendor negotiations on an ongoing basis
  • Take responsibility for legal negotiation of all vendor agreements.

Within 12 months, you’ll

  • Take responsibility for all customer and prospect legal contract negotiations
  • Deliver contract management database of existing customer agreements
  • Assist the Lever procurement function with commercial negotiations on high value vendor agreements
  • Identify at least one area of opportunity where you can contribute and grow elsewhere within the legal team (ie data protection, intellectual property, employment agreements, etc.)
  • Research and select technology solutions to improve the contract administration process. You’ll lead the implementation process and conduct any relevant trainings
  • Re-evaluate our current processes and workflows. Identify areas of opportunity and create a plan for improvement. Present your plan to the Head of Sales Operations and Head of Legal
  • Have the opportunity for promotion to junior corporate counsel based on performance
