Backing Mistral, From First Check to Europe’s Next Powerhouse
I met Arthur three and a half years ago, lucky enough to cross paths with him while visiting Alan's office in Paris with my partner Jan. At the time, Mistral had barely been incorporated, and Arthur walked us through his vision: enabling enterprises to deploy intelligence with full control over their data, their expertise, and their costs. It was a bold idea, but Arthur's conviction about where AI was headed, and the caliber of the team he'd pulled together, were more than enough to convince us we needed to be part of that journey.
Fast forward to today, and it's remarkable to see not only the scale of what Arthur and his co-founders, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, have built, but how closely it tracks the vision he painted that day. What started as a model company is now a full-stack provider of intelligence for large enterprises, from compute, to model customization, to running live business-critical workflows. Mistral partners with customers throughout their AI value chain to deliver real business value while leaving control and ownership in their hands. Along the way, they've stayed agile enough to keep adapting their roadmap to market demand and technological leaps, while staying true to that original conviction.
The trends behind Mistral are powerful, with most of the demand for these products still ahead of us. The first is enterprise adoption itself, which will only expand once companies trust agents to run processes end-to-end automatically. The second is sovereignty over AI deployment, with the growing recognition that control over intelligence systems is a critical strategic edge. As the only EU-native frontier lab, Mistral has been building for this from the start. That foresight has set them up to capture demand fast from any customer, anywhere, who needs frontier intelligence on their own terms.
At Index, it always starts with people, and every investment we've made in Mistral has been first and foremost a testament to its founding team. When I met Arthur, he was fresh out of DeepMind, developing models himself. He's since become one of Europe's leading voices on AI, with his own view of how the landscape should evolve and a clear case for why a company like Mistral must exist. It's rare to meet an entrepreneur who can move so fluently between those two altitudes, and rarer still to watch someone still climbing this fast. Across that range, Mistral has rapidly built credibility with enterprise and government buyers, attracted top talent from across Europe, and earned the trust of some of the world's most demanding industries.
We’re thrilled to partner again with Arthur, Guillaume, Timothée, and the Mistral team, this time as part of the largest round ever raised by a European company. We believe the best is yet to come as this gigantic market takes shape.
