About Motorway

Motorway is the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace - our online-only platform connects private car sellers with thousands of verified dealers nationwide, ensuring everyone gets the best deal. Founded in 2017, our award-winning, technology-led approach has redefined the experience of selling a car. Motorway is backed by some of the world’s leading technology investors, having raised £143 million in Series C funding.

This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing scale-up at a crucial phase of growth and help change an industry for the better.

About the role

What are we looking for? We’re looking for someone who is a real team player, proactive, willing to step out of their comfort zone and is keen to develop their legal career at a really exciting business, with a collaborative culture.

What types of work will I get involved in? The role offers immediate involvement on a whole host of matters. This includes the full gamut of commercial agreements (partnerships, marketing and SaaS), providing support on corporate transactions, supporting our payments function with financial and payment regulation compliance support, as well as our employment teams.

Who will I work with? Reporting to the Director of Legal, you will work in close partnership with the Senior Counsel and Head of Marketplace Trust, as well as the wider Legal team. This is a high-visibility role requiring you to build relationships across the entire organisation - from providing hands-on support to customer service teams to delivering strategic advice to the C-Suite.

Learning and development opportunities. As a key member of a growing legal team, you will benefit from close working relationships and plenty of opportunities for learning and development. Life at Motorway is fast-paced, but we have a strong team culture of growth as a team and as individuals. All of the lawyers in the team have backgrounds working in private practice in the City and are keen to ensure that the right candidate for this role receives the benefit of proper supervision and opportunities to get involved in work that interests them.

Requirements

  • UK-qualified solicitor with ideally at least 3 years PQE. This is just a guide and we will consider applications from all candidates who meet the role requirements and who are a good fit.

  • Have trained at either a reputable law firm or in-house, with in-house experience preferably within a tech business or VC-backed scale-up.

  • You will have commercial contracts drafting experience alongside experience in at least one of the following areas: (a) M&A / corporate transactions; (b) AI governance; (c) commercial disputes; (d) hosted software agreements; (e) payments regulation; or (f) employment law.

  • Proactive in adopting AI technologies to drive efficiency, with a clear understanding of how to use these tools responsibly and accurately.

  • Willing to roll up your sleeves and take on challenges outside of your area of expertise.

  • A strong communicator, able to explain complex issues in a clear way.

  • Ability to build trust and rapport at all levels and work collaboratively within a team.

  • Adaptable and are capable of thinking on your feet.

  • Proactive and always think of potential solutions, not just potential problems.

  • You are ambitious and keen to learn.

  • Life assurance / death-in-service benefit.

  • Enhanced maternity/paternity leave.
